Election tampering? Insider market manipulation? Not just unethical, but should be illegal. I was a volunteer for I-194. The ballot initiative campaign was intense. It’s going to get really rough as Dark Money forces/allies stuff the mailboxes of voters with misinformation to defeat the initiative at the polls.

Thanks seems inadequate for all of the work on behalf of Montanans you have done and are continuing to do, but thank you!

People are pushing back! That’s why the Montana Plan is on the ballot. Join with Russ Cleveland to get this vitally important measure across the finish line instead of rehashing the primary ad nauseam.

When one billionaire buys a Democratic primary in Montana, it’s a flashing red warning sign for our democracy. If we ignore this, gloss over this, and accept the billionaire’s choice for us, what is left of our self rule? The TEI is run by a group of people who all endorsed Seth Bodnar out of the gate while funneling dark money to his campaign. I’m not against it but I am against grift, lies and corruption. Russ can do what he likes but it doesn’t change the fact that the same tech billionaire helping Bodnar also invested millions in promoting Bankhead. As long as I breathe, I will not let billionaires limit my choices and force my vote. The primary is over. The fight for democracy is not.

I thought I was pretty informed regarding the MT primary. Your piece is confusing as to how the Republican strategy was supposed to work. Has anyone watched the interviews Russell Rowland has done with Alani Bankhead? They both try to debunk the “dark money” angle.

The Republicans wanted to crush our campaign. That’s the reality. After nearly two years of work in rural Montana, we had people pulling the Dem ballot to vote for us. We had a chance to knock Bodnar out and win a hard-earned victory for Dems in the general. The GOP used the same marketing they’ve used against every Dem candidate, but Bankhead’s billionaire backer spent $3.4 million to convince voters of a lie. The billionaire-funded dark money campaign pushed endless propaganda that the GOP strategy was to elevate me. It wasn’t. Russell is not a journalist, nor does he fact check anything on his podcast. Bankhead never called out the dark money lies, bullying and harassment. She could have denounced this and stood up to the bullies. She actually doubled down and said, ‘people just liked her more.’ $3.4 million in dark money propaganda that flooded airwaves for Bankhead, paid by the same billionaire supporter of Bodnar and coordinated by his team can’t really be debunked. It’s backed by cold hard numbers on FEC websites. Bankhead says she didn’t coordinate but Bodnar’s billionaire picked her and paid millions to spread lies to elevate her. Why? Truth will out.

Thanks. It’s just been difficult to wade through this. In the interview, Bankhead pretty much glossed over her sudden rise, didn’t know much about it or the players involved. But as you pointed out, she never rose to the level of debunking the disinformation. I feel very badly for our state and the choices we have ended up with. Seems like my vote was taken away.
